Some 54% of UK electricity generation in 2019 came from low-carbon sources, including 37% from renewables often referred to as clean energy, from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished.
The UK is the windiest country in Europe and could power itself several times over using wind. The UK and France also have significant tidal stream resource in their coastal waters. Wave and tidal stream energy have the potential to meet up to 20% of the UK’s current electricity demand, representing a 30-to-50 gigawatt (GW) installed capacity.
Further afield, China, Brazil, Canada, the United States, and Russia are the five largest producers of hydropower and nuclear power continues to provide a carbon free alternative power source for many nations.
Solar energy is used worldwide and is increasingly popular for generating electricity or heating and desalinating water.
In each of these applications, power export, system control and monitoring all rely on rugged cable systems able to provide lifetime dependability in the most hostile environments. SMI design connectivity to deliver fit and forget assurance.

What our customers say
When COVID struck we were in the middle of delivering a very complex project…you stuck to the task and got the job done in the midst of it all, working with focus and diligence in spite of the extra constraints and difficulties that it entailed. We got the project completed and the system installed, the client is extremely happy with the result. Without the dedication and commitment of companies like SMI there is no way this would have been possible – we thank you again for that.
