Reuters delivers exclusive drone footage showing devastation in Mariupol

Date: 29 March 2022

One month since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol has been the scene of some of the fiercest bombardment in the conflict.

To help demonstrate the scale of devastation, Reuters was alone in providing broadcast-quality and critical drone footage of Mariupol– powerful footage that thousands of Reuters customers worldwide turned to for their broadcasts.

Drone video captured exclusively by Reuters on March 24 shows besieged Mariupol residents in a long queue for humanitarian aid being distributed by Russia at a former shopping center.

"Without a drone and its ability to show the thousands of residents lining up for Russian aid, the images wouldn't have demonstrated the real scale of the scene, so it's another really important dimension to our reporting," said Eleanor Biles, Europe Editor, Reuters Video.

Reuters drone footage continues to be one the most popular features for customers – offering aerial vantages under a wider variety of conditions – and is another example of Reuters extensive coverage surrounding the conflict. With 2,500 journalists in 200 locations, Reuters is uniquely able to explore all the angles, with reporters in the region and specialist journalists around the world bringing global and local expertise.
