BERLIN, OCTOBER 18, 2021—Reuters, the world’s leading provider of trusted news, insight and analysis, today announced it will host an event featuring three prominent German economists discussing the German economy in the post-Merkel world.

“Taxes, Debt and Subsidies – Prospects for the German Economy after the Election,” held on November 30 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Reuters German-language text service, will feature Prof. Dr. Monika Schnitzer, member of the German Council of Economic Experts; Prof. Dr. Marcel Fratzscher, President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW); and Prof. Dr.. Clemens Fuest, President of the ifo Institute of Economic Research.

In the lead-up to the 50th anniversary, Reuters will also take a look back at some of the milestones in German history which Reuters correspondents have reported since 1971, including the fall of the Berlin wall, economic and financial crises, the monetary policy of the Bundesbank and the European Central Bank, mega-mergers and mega-failures of German and international companies.

"Our 50th anniversary comes at a critical time for Germany as we transition to a post-Merkel world," said Maria Sheahan, co-bureau chief of Reuters in the Germany/Austria/Switzerland region. "This event will bring together leading economic minds to discuss and debate the country's future at a time of great uncertainty, delivering our customers and readers with critical insights on Germany's economy under new leadership."

“We are enormously proud of our rich history in Germany and the value we’ve been delivering to customers for 50 years,” said Sabine Wollrab, co-bureau chief. “We started with a dozen journalists using typewriters and punch strips. The technology changed but the vision stands – to deliver fast, fact-based and insightful news to our customers, now more vital then ever.”

Launched in December 1971, Reuters German-language text service provides German media and financial market customers with essential news in local language with a focus on economic news, financial markets, top German news stories and international news.
