Two of Australia's prestigious journalism awards - the Lowy Institute Media Award and the Walkley Awards - have shortlisted Reuters Australia & Pacific Politics Correspondent Kirsty Needham for her reporting of Pacific region politics.

Kirsty's reporting on security and diplomacy in the Pacific Islands earned her a finalist nod for the Lowy Institute Media Award. The award recognises excellence in coverage of international affairs by Australian journalists and media outlets that have deepened the knowledge or shaped the discussion of international policy issues affecting Australia.

The 67th annual Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism, organised by the Walkley Foundation, has named Kirsty as a finalist for the "Scoop of the Year" category for her reporting on China's push for Pacific security deals. The Walkleys reward best-in-class Australian journalism that sets the industry standard for excellence.

On her shortlists, Kirsty commented: "I'm honoured to be a finalist for these two awards. It shows that Reuters reporting on the Pacific Islands - where tensions between superpowers are rising and climate change is seen as the biggest security threat - is having an impact."

The Lowy Institute Media Award and the Walkey Awards will announce their winners in mid-November.
