Reuters, the world's largest multimedia news provider, was today awarded a 2022 Pulitzer Prize from Columbia University, as well as being named a finalist.
Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, Amit Dave and the late Danish Siddiqui received the award in the Feature Photography category for images capturing the impact of COVID-19 in India.
The Pulitzer committee recognized Reuters for a series of photos taken between April 12 and June 10, when COVID-19 infections in India exploded. During those 59 days, at least 15 million new infections were reported, making India's daily totals the highest in the world.
"This was India's second wave in the COVID-19 pandemic, but a world largely preoccupied with its own suffering was jolted awake to the scale of India's outbreak after Reuters photographers documented it," said Reuters Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni. "I'm incredibly proud of Adnan, Sanna, Amit and our beloved colleague Danish for their work bringing the impact of COVID-19 in India to life. To have Danish's incredible work honored in this way is a tribute to the enduring mark he has left on the world of photojournalism. His body of work will live on in the hearts and minds of his family, friends, colleagues and the world at large."
Reuters was also recognized as a finalist in the Feature Photography category, for capturing thousands of images of the climate crisis facing the planet. Photographers Cheney Orr, Baz Ratner, Jorge Silva, Umit Bektas, Amanda Perobelli, David Swanson, Anushree Fadnavis, Hannibal Hanschke, Aly Song, Jose Cabezas, Jesse Winter, Adrees Latif, Jon Nazca, Thomas Peter and Carlos Osorio were all commended for their work.
"Our photographers captured the scale and magnitude of the devastating outbreaks of tornadoes, flooding, pollution and difficult weather conditions in often very challenging circumstances," commented Galloni. "No matter the difficulty gaining access in extreme weather, our photographers were prepared and committed to record the world and history as it unfolded."
